| Computer designer, born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, USA. He studied at the University of Wisconsin, and went on to establish himself at the forefront of large-scale computer design through his work at Engineering Associates, Remington Rand, UNIVAC, and Control Data Corp. In 1972 he founded Cray Research based in Colorado Springs and established the standard for supercomputers with the introduction of the CRAY-1 (1976) and CRAY-2 (1985). He resigned as chief executive in 1981 (but remained as consultant director) to devote himself to computer design, and made significant contributions in vector register technology and cooling systems. |
