| Geneticist, born in New York City, USA. He studied physics at Purdue University, and taught biophysics there until 1965, when he moved to the California Institute of Technology. He first showed that genes can be split and then recombined, and he did much to relate genes as chemical entities to their observed behaviour in biological systems. |
