| Composer, born in Sontsovka, SE Ukraine. He began to compose at the age of five, studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and won a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. During World War 1 he lived in London, then moved to the USA, returning to the USSR in 1934. He wrote many occasional works for official celebrations, in addition to popular pieces such as Peter and the Wolf (1936) and film music. His works have a vast range, including seven symphonies, nine concertos, ballets, operas, suites, cantatas, sonatas, and songs. |
