| Philosopher, economist, and Orthodox theologian, born in Livny, W Russia. A professor of political economy at Kiev (1901–6) and then Moscow (1906–18), he became disillusioned with Socialism after 1906, and became a priest in 1918. Expelled from Russia (1923), he was appointed dean and professor of the Orthodox Theological Academy in Paris (1925–44), where he expounded Sophiology, the view that sophia (the Divine Wisdom) mediates between God and the world. |
