| Russian revolutionary and politician, born in Urzhum, W Russia. Educated at Kazan, he played an active part in the October Revolution and Civil War, and during the 1920s held a number of leading provincial Party posts. In 1934 he became a full member of the Politburo, and at the 17th Party Congress was elected a secretary of the Central Committee. Later that year he was assassinated at his Leningrad headquarters, possibly at the instigation of Stalin, and his death served as the pretext for a widespread campaign of reprisals. |
