| biography:
| Composer and pianist, born in Vladimir, W Russia. He studied at Moscow Conservatory, where he became professor (1878) and director (1885–9), succeeding Tchaikovsky. He wrote music of all kinds, including two cantatas, John of Damascus, After the Reading of a Psalm, and six symphonies. A proponent of counterpoint in music, he wrote a two-volume work on the subject (completed 1909). |
