| biography:
| Soviet admiral, born in Podolsk, EC Ukraine. He joined the navy in 1927 and was given command of surface boats in the Black Sea from 1932 onwards, ending World War 2 in charge of a destroyer squadron. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Soviet navy by Khrushchev in 1956, and under Brezhnev oversaw a massive naval build-up, both surface and underwater, creating a force capable of challenging the West's by the 1970s. He remained in command of the navy until his death. |
