| biography:
| Russian general, born in Furmanka, S Ukraine. He joined the Tsarist army in 1915, and in the Revolution took part in the defence of Tsaritsyn. In 1940 he smashed Finnish resistance during the Russo-Finnish War, then commanded in the Ukraine, but failed to stop the German advance (1942). He also served as People's Commissar of Defence, improving the system of army training. He retired in 1960. |
