| biography:
| A proverb-collector, poet, and playwright, born in Toledo, C Spain. Over 3000 of his Refranes glosados were edited by Emilio Cotarelo (1915) but most of them remain unpublished. His Relaciones constitute an anecdotal history of Toledo, and his Cancionero was published in 1874 by the Sociedad de Bibliófilos Andaluces. In addition to his verse, it contains an entremés, and three Representaciones: de la historia evangélica del capítulo nono de San Juan (including amusing scenes enlivened by a pícaro called Lazarillo), de la parábola de San Mateo a los veinte capítulos de su sagrado Evangelio (1548, first performed in Toledo), and de la famosa historia de Ruth. There is also a Coloquio de la Muerte, con todas las edades y estados. |
