| biography:
| French soldier and military engineer, born in Saint Léger, EC France. After serving in the Frondes (1651), he joined the government forces in 1653, and by 1658 was chief engineer under Turenne, serving with him at the siege of Lille (1667). He brought about a revolution in siege warfare and fortification; he directed siege operations throughout Louis XIV's campaigns, and surrounded the kingdom with a cordon of fortresses (1667–88). He was created Marshal of France in 1703. |
