| biography:
| Painter, born in Venice, NE Italy. His surname arose because he was sealer of briefs to Pope Clement VII (1523). He studied under Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione, and went to Rome in c.1510, where he worked in conjunction with Michelangelo. In 1519 he painted his masterpiece, ‘The Raising of Lazarus’ (National Gallery, London). He was also an accomplished portrait painter. |
