| biography:
| Explorer and navigator, the son of John Cabot, born in Venice, NE Italy, or Bristol, SW England. He accompanied his father to the American coast, then entered the service of Ferdinand V of Spain as a cartographer (1512). In 1526 he explored the coast of South America for Emperor Charles V, but failed to colonize the area, and was imprisoned and banished to Africa. He returned to Spain in 1533, and later to England, where he was made inspector of the navy by Edward VI. |
