| biography:
| US senator, born near Chandlerville, Illinois, USA. Elected to the US House of Representatives (Democrat, Illinois, 1935–9) and to the US Senate (1939–51), he supported the New Deal, serving as Democratic whip and Senate majority leader. His liberal beliefs left him politically vulnerable in the McCarthy era, and he was defeated in his bid for re-election to a third term. |
