| Physiologist, born in Grenå, NC Denmark. He studied at Copenhagen, and became professor of animal physiology there (1916–45). He researched the process of respiration, gas exchange in the lung, and the supply of oxygen to muscle tissue, discovering the motor-regulating mechanism of capillaries. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1920. |
