| Boxer, born in London, UK. A bricklayer, he took up boxing in 1849, and became English heavyweight champion in 1857 despite weighing only 11 stone, which would be normal for a middleweight. Throughout his career he lost only one fight. His last and most famous contest was with the US champion John Heenan for the first world championship title; the fight lasted 2 hr 6 min, and was declared a draw after 42 rounds. |
