| biography:
| Marshal of France, born in Goslar, C Germany, the illegitimate son of Augustus II, King of Poland, formerly Elector of Saxony. He served in the French army in the War of the Polish Succession (1733–8), and in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–8) invaded Bohemia, taking Prague by storm. In 1744 Louis XV appointed him commander in Flanders, where he won victories at Fontenoy (1745), Raucoux (1746), and Lauffeld (1747), and was promoted Marshal of France. After the war he retired. |
