| biography:
| Painter, probably born in Siena, C Italy. Though trained in the late 14th-c Sienese manner, he was receptive to the diverse contemporary developments of both the International Gothic style and the Florentine Early Renaissance. These influences he blended into a unique, highly inventive style, full of narrative interest. His finest work was the altarpiece of St Francis (1437–44), painted for S Francesco, Borgo San Sepolcro, but now dispersed. Some of the finest predella panels are in the National Gallery in London. |
