| Sculptor and printmaker, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The son of a Swedish father and a mother of Cherokee and African-American ancestry, he was based in San Francisco, and in 1915 began study at the California School of Fine Arts. He worked in wood with lacquered and painted layers of gesso and linen, as in ‘Forever Free’ (1933). |
