| Feminist and educational reformer, born in Southampton, Hampshire, S England, UK. A vigorous campaigner for higher education for women, in 1869 she founded a small college for women students at Hitchin, which was transferred to Cambridge as Girton College in 1873. She was Mistress of Girton (1873–5), and honorary secretary (1882–1904). |
