| biography:
| Indian politician and former Sikh extremist leader. He trained at the orthodox Damdani Taksal Sikh missionary school, becoming its head priest in 1971. His campaign broadened into a demand for a separate state of ‘Khalistan’ during the early 1980s, precipitating a bloody Hindu-Sikh conflict in Punjab. After taking refuge in the Golden Temple complex at Amritsar with about 500 devoted followers, he was killed by the Indian Security Forces. |
