| US representative and governor, born in East Providence, Pennsylvania, USA. A Dartmouth graduate and attorney in Boston (1875–92), he served in the US House of Representatives (Republican, Massachusetts, 1893–1913). Politically independent, he opposed the annexation of the Philippines and spoke against increased federal power during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. He left to run for senator and was governor of Massachusetts (1916–18). Author of political biographies, he lectured on government at Ivy League colleges (1902–15). |
