| Psychiatric reformer, born in York, North Yorkshire, N England, UK, the grandson of William Tuke. He acquired in his childhood an intense interest in the York Retreat, the psychiatric hospital founded by his family. His Description of the Retreat (1813) contains a classic account of the principles of ‘moral therapy’, which was the basis of the therapeutic milieu there. Tuke's son, Daniel Hack Tuke (1827–95), became a leading psychiatrist. |
