| Architect, born in Beaver Dam, Pennsylvania, USA. Called ‘The Architect of Philadelphia’, he designed public buildings, schools, and churches, and, working with Thomas S Kirkbride, became an authority on designing insane asylums. He wrote seven influential plan books (1852–73). |
