| Editor and publisher, born in Co Antrim, Ireland. Emigrating to the USA in 1866, he established one of the earliest US newspaper syndicates (1884) and founded McClure's magazine (1893), which he made especially successful with the introduction of ‘muckraking’ journalism after the turn of the century. In 1897–99 he was a partner with Frank Nelson Doubleday in a book publishing firm. |
