| US soldier, born in Washington Co, Maryland, USA. The son of a congressman, he trained at West Point (1818). At the head of a corps of ‘flying artillery’, he advanced his guns to within 100 yards of the Mexican lines at Palo Alto (8 May 1846), but was mortally wounded there and died a few days later. |
