| biography:
| US governor and cabinet member, born in Harford Co, Maryland, USA. A lawyer and flour-mill owner, he served as Iowa's governor (Republican, 1859–63), using his own money to equip the Iowa Union volunteers, and quashing proslavery ‘Copperheads’ with homeguard troops. Twice serving as a US senator (1866–7, 1877–81), he was briefly governor between terms (1876–7) and became Garfield's secretary of the interior (1881–2). |
