| biography:
| Publisher, born in New York City, New York, USA. Starting as an aide to a New Jersey judge, he became manager of the judge's local paper, acquired control of his own newspaper, the Staten Island Advance, and built a large chain of papers through acquisitions which he kept going through cost-cutting economies. He often dealt harshly with unions. A major philanthropist, he founded the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 1964. |
