| biography:
| Aviator, born in Davenport, Iowa, USA. Little is known of his early life but by age 21 he was working as a Wild West showman and had changed his name to Cody. He moved to England in 1896 and acquired British nationality. He began experimenting with man-lifting kites, and was contracted by the British Army (1905) as instructor in kite flying at the Balloon School. He was involved in the planning and construction of the first British dirigible and began building an early type of aeroplane. In 1908 (16 Oct), he flew his machine at Farnborough for a distance of 424 m/1390 ft before it crashed. This is now recognised as the first official powered aeroplane flight in Britain. He was killed piloting one of his own later planes. |
