| US soldier, born in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA. The son of a Confederate army officer, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (1890) and served in the cavalry. As chief of the Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Force in France (1917–19), he became a pioneer of armoured warfare. |
