| Protestant clergyman and educator, born in New Castle Co, Delaware, USA. Ordained in 1747, he led the Great Awakening revival in Virginia, where he became a stout defender of the freedom of religious sects from the authority of the colony's established church. He attracted a large following as a preacher, and his sermons were widely published. In 1759 he succeeded Jonathan Edwards as president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) and served there until his death. |
