| Poet and satirist, baptized at Strensham, Hereford and Worcester, WC England, UK. He was educated at Worcester grammar school, and perhaps Oxford or Cambridge. He held several secretarial posts before becoming steward of Ludlow Castle (1661) and in later years was secretary to the Duke of Buckingham. His great poetic work, Hudibras, appeared in three parts (1663, 1664, 1678). A burlesque satire on Puritanism and on human failings in general, it secured immediate popularity, and was a special favourite at the court of Charles II. |
