| Physician, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The son of John Bard, he studied medicine in London and Edinburgh and remained in New York City as a Loyalist during the American Revolution. He helped found the first medical college in New York State (1765), with which he was affiliated until c.1795. The college was united with Columbia University (1792) and he was appointed dean. He also helped found New York Hospital (1791), the public library, and the New York Dispensary. He was primarily interested in obstetrics and midwifery. |
