| Theatre and film director, born in Reading, SE England, UK. After graduating from Cambridge University he launched himself onto the theatrical scene with innovative stage productions in London and at the Chichester Festival Theatre. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992 and that season directed Troilus and Cressida, The Alchemist, Richard III, and The Tempest. He was artistic director of London's Donmar Warehouse (1992–2002). Shows he directed there include Translations (1993), Cabaret (1994), The Glass Menagerie (1996), and Company (1996, Olivier Award for Best Director). In 1998 he produced the world premiere of The Blue Room. His 2002 productions of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night gained further Olivier Awards making him the first Olivier triple winner. He made his film debut to great acclaim in 1999 with American Beauty (Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture). Later films include Road to Perdition (2002). |
