| Philosopher, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at Oxford, and in 1893 was appointed to the chair of philosophy at Manchester University. His growing concern for the situation of European Jewry led him to introduce Chaim Weizmann, his colleague at Manchester, to Arthur James Balfour - a meeting which led to the Balfour Declaration, establishing the principle of a Jewish national home. |
