| biography:
| Biblical character, a legendary hero of the tribe of Dan, purportedly the last of Israel's tribal leaders (‘judges’) prior to Samuel and the establishment of the monarchy under Saul. Stories (Jud 13–16) tell of his great strength, his battles against the Philistines, his 20-year rule, and his fatal infatuation with Delilah. When she cut his hair, breaking his Nazirite vow, he lost his strength, and was held by the Philistines until his hair grew back and he pulled down their temple upon them. |
