| Namibian nationalist leader, and first president of independent Namibia (1990– ), born in Ongandjera, N Namibia. Educated at a Finnish missionary school in Windhoek, he entered active politics in 1958, founding the South West Africa People's Organisation of Namibia. Exiled in 1960 and again in 1966, he established a military wing, the People's Liberation Army of Namibia, in the mid-1960s, and his long struggle for Namibia's independence eventually bore fruit in 1989. |
