| Educator and writer, born in Tarnów, Poland (formerly in Austria). Educated in Austria, he went to the USA in 1927. He held the first Miller Chair of Jewish History, Literature and Institutions at Columbia University (1930–63), edited the Jewish Social Studies quarterly, and wrote Social and Religious History of the Jews (18 vols, 1937–52). A member of many educational and government organizations, he testified about the history of European anti-Semitism at the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann. |
