| biography:
| Historian and Roman politician, born in Amiternum, Samnium. A tribune in 52 BC, his licentiousness caused his expulsion from the Senate in 50 BC. He was restored to senatorial rank in 47 BC, and he served in the African campaign. His governorship of Numidia (46–44 BC) was sullied by oppression and extortion, the funds from which he used to create the famous Sallustian Gardens. In his retirement he wrote his important histories, the Bellum Catilinae (43–42 BC), and the Bellum Jugurthinum (41–40 BC). |
