| Actor and playwright, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia, the son of French actor-manager Lucien Guitry (1860–1925). He first appeared on stage in Russia with his father's company, and later acted in Paris (1902) and London (1920). He wrote nearly 100 plays, mostly light comedies, many performed in English. He also wrote and directed several films, including Le Roman d'un tricheur (1936, trans The Cheat). |
