| biography:
| British statesman and prime minister (1846–52, 1865–6), born in London, UK. He studied at Edinburgh, and became an MP in 1813. He was home secretary (1835–9) and secretary for war (1839–41), and became Liberal prime minister after the Conservative Party split over the repeal of the Corn Laws (1846). In Aberdeen's coalition of 1852 he was foreign secretary and Leader of the House of Commons. He lost popularity over alleged incompetent management of the Crimean War, and retired (1855), but became foreign secretary again in the second Palmerston administration (1859), and was made an earl in 1861. On Palmerston's death, he again became premier, resigning in 1866. |
