| biography:
| Jazz tenor saxophonist, born in St Joseph, Missouri, USA (he claimed 1904 as his birth year). He joined Fletcher Henderson's jazz orchestra in 1923. The performances on romping swing tunes such as ‘The Stampede’ (1926), and on slow ballads such as ‘One Hour’ (1929), altered the way the tenor saxophone was played, and popularized the instrument in jazz music. He played widely in Europe (1934–9), and on returning to New York City recorded ‘Body and Soul’, a jazz landmark. |
