| Poet and mystic, born in Lurgan, Co Armagh, C Northern Ireland, UK. He studied at the Metropolitan School of Art, met Yeats, and became interested in theosophy. He worked as a draper's clerk, and published his first book, Homeward: Songs by the Way (1894), which made him a recognized figure in the Irish literary renaissance. He was editor of the Irish Homestead, later called the Irish Statesman (1906–30). His best-known book is The Candle of Vision (1918), an expression of his religious philosophy. Other works include volumes of verse, such as The Divine Vision (1903) and Midsummer Eve (1928). |
