| US senator, born in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA. The son of Huey Long, he was raised in a completely political environment, served in the US Senate (Democrat, Louisiana, 1948–87), and was chairman of the Finance Committee and the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation. In 1965–9 he was the Democrats' majority leader, but a ‘revolt’ by Northern liberals replaced him with Edward Kennedy. |
