| Spanish composer. A disciple of Arrieta at the Madrid Conservatory, with Ruperto Chapí, he was one of the creators of the genero chico (comic one-act pieces) in the style of Barbieri. His well-known La verbena de la paloma (1893), with libretto by Ricardo de la Vega, is one of the masterpieces of the genre. He also wrote several operas, notably Los amantes de Teruel (1889) and La Dolores (1895), based on the drama by Feliu y Codina. Other works include Escenas andaluzas, Salamanca, En la Alhambra, and pieces of chamber music. |
