| Count of Sicily, the son of Tancred Hauteville. He helped his brother Robert bring under his domain the territories in S Italy and Sicily that had been given to him by Pope Niccolò II with the Treaty of Melfi (1059). He took Puglia from the Byzantines (1051), fought the Arabs in Sicily conquering Palermo (1071), and fought in Puglia and Calabria for his nephew Ruggero, bringing Catholicism back to Sicily without persecuting other religions. |
