| biography:
| Writer, born in Bremen, NW Germany. An interior designer, artist, and graphic artist, in 1899 he founded the periodical Die Insel together with Alfred Heymel (his uncle) and Otto Bierbaum. A devout Protestant, he became a member of the Bavarian Synod (1946), and his beliefs coloured his vivid poetry which adheres strictly to classical forms, as in Mitte des Lebens (1930) and Weltliche Gedichte (1940). In his prose writing he explored the question of the poet's political and religious responsibility. He also translated Racine, Molière, and Shakespeare. |
