| King of Hungary (1572–1608) and Bohemia (1575–1611), and Holy Roman Emperor (1576–1612), born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Maximilian II. As a proponent of the Counter-Reformation he gave the Bohemian Stände his assurance of religious freedom in his Majestätsbrief of 1609. Due to mental illness he was forced to relinquish government in Austria, Hungary and Moravia (1608), and also in Bohemia (1611) to his brother Matthias. |
