| biography:
| Writer, born in Basel, N Switzerland. A post-classicist in the tradition of Meyer, not influenced by contemporary trends, he produced works at once cosmopolitan and spiritual in tone and disciplined in language. The themes of love, nature, war, and honour dominate his novellas, which include Der Opfergang (1912), Unsterblichkeit (1922), Moselfahrt aus Liebeskummer (1932), and Wir fordern Reims zur Übergabe auf (1935). Among later works are Das Märchen vom Walfisch (1951) and Die Geschichte vom Zopf in Rothenburg (1952). |
