| Dancer, choreographer, and ballet director, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied with Sonia Gaskell (1904–74), making his debut in 1952 in her Ballet Recital Group, later known as the Netherlands Ballet and then as the Dutch National Ballet. He became her choreographer, co-director and, eventually, the company's sole director. He was one of the founding members of Netherlands Dance Theatre, a group that broke away from the Netherlands Ballet in 1959. |
