| biography:
| Strip cartoonist, born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, C England, UK. He studied at Nottingham School of Art, and started working on strips for Amalgamated Press children's comics in 1920. He worked freelance from 1930 on Steve and Stumpy (for Butterfly) and many other strips, notably George the Jolly Gee-Gee (for Radio Fun, 1938) and Chimpo's Circus (for Happy Days, 1938). He also designed many annual covers and frontispieces. He has been called ‘the king of comic artists’ in the ‘golden age’ of British comics. |
